Afghanistan has been suffering from serious climate change impacts since 1971 especially in the last 30 years. Afghanistan faces severe environmental challenges, exacerbated by decades of conflicts and the increasing impacts of climate change. Major provinces are plagued by greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the use of fossil fuels, poor urban infrastructure, heavy precipitation, flooding, increasing temperature and environmental degradation etc. In response to the mentioned phenomena ECOFA has a history of success in water conservation, dam construction, and environmental education. This initiative seeks to build on these efforts by introducing carbon credit schemes that will empower communities while contributing to global climate mitigation efforts.
The factors that came to my mind which could improve lives are the development of education, the sustainability of agriculture and the provision of efficient and useful services to the people. In this way, I, along with my other friends and colleagues, started the rainwater conservation in a vast dry and non-irrigable land located between three districts, so we built numerous water reservoirs and small dams. After some time, we extended this program to some other provinces of Afghanistan as well. In this way, we were able to increase the underground water reserves, make the dry land green and meanwhile create work opportunities for the people during construction of the dams and after construction by cultivating trees and shrubs around the dams. When we saw that our dreams can come true and there are vast capacities available around us, we intended to arrange and organize our activities in the form of an NGO, so we decided to establish an NGO to better manage our works and acquire and investigate more funding opportunities through which these efforts can run smoothly. Hence, we established the ECOFA (Environment Conservation Organization for Afghanistan), a non-profitable and non-political organization operating in Afghanistan to build a better environment for the people and other animals.
Through these efforts, we would like to develop lives by sustaining and improving the natural environment and to facilitate and educate people on how to participate with the government and NGOs to contribute to these efforts.
This profile is a showcase of what the NGO has achieved, and what potential remains to be harvested.
Have a pleasant read!
